Lucy - New Media Application

This page looks at the differing media that helps the design, promotion and delivery of the overall documentary, taking into consideration media convergence and the way the audience can interact and gain interest towards our documentary.

What is Media Convergence?

Through the stages of promotion for our documentary, Media Convergence has been central towards the outcome of each piece of promotional material. Media Convergence is where different types of media (such as social networking, research websites and promotional websites) interact with each other.

Not only that, but media convergence could also be seen where different media forms unify in one separate space, e.g. a mobile phone or laptop. For example, newspapers can be read on a mobile phone and on your social networking site, emails can be sent from your mobile phone, music can be bought on your laptop, which ultimately goes to your iPod, etc etc. Media forms interact with each other daily in this technological era... This video explains in detail:

However, this video was posted in 2009, and I would argue that media convergence has since grown even more. There is now a link on Twitter where you can link up to your Facebook account, which syncs to your iPhone, and going back to Facebook, you can now read newspaper articles for free on Facebook applications. The amount of media convergence going on in daily life is surprising!

The 'new' iCloud from Apple is a perfect example of Media Convergence...

Taking this new form of media interacting with and influencing each other, I put that into consideration when forming some promotional materials for our documentary.

Alongside working with the Marketing crew (Chris and Alex), I set up a twitter account: OneLoudCat.

I also set up a Facebook fan page, that generates interest in our documentary because, like Twitter, it gives the audience 'sneak peeks' into the production of our documentary, gaining information about what we are doing towards our documentary. Furthermore, the use of a Facebook fan page is useful to us because it is a modern way for filmmakers to interact personally with their audience.

I also created the first design for an idea Rosie and I had for getting t-shirts for the crew to wear during filming, screenings and any kind of promotional activity for our documentary. These are the outlines of the t-shirts:

However, these designs changed slightly when we ordered the t-shirts:

These t-shirts will be worn during filming and during presentations, screenings and promotional activity for our documentary. This adds a sense of professionalism to the group and as we would all be wearing them, it would be easy for the public to differentiate us from everyone else.

Other forms of promotional material the I have designed/signed the group up to are:

As Producer, I thought it was better if one person signed the group up to everything (and assigned it to my job to do this!) instead of different people signing us up for separate websites, as it caused less confusion and the group all now know what we are signed up to, the username and password to that website and therefore could add to the websites at any time.

All of these promotional materials help audience participation, attraction and awareness regarding our documentary. Talking specifically about the superhero masks, they would be a fun and interactive way for the audience to gain interest in our documentary, because it gets them individually involved. Alongside this, we will also hand out flyers with a 'cut out your own mask' outline, so not only do they receive information about our documentary, but also get the chance to interact with our documentary this way, too.

Real Life Superhero Registry

I have also signed the group up the the UK real life superheroes registry. This is our official account. This way, we can contact and interact with the UK real life superheroes and get involved further into what they are planning and their events. My aim with this is to create a relationship with one of the biggest Real Life Superhero registry's to try and get not only possible primaries and secondaries for our documentary, but to also sell our documentary to the site and the superheroes themselves. The superheroes on this website are one of our main niche audience's, so it would be wrong of us to ignore it.

However, many people have posted onto the forum on this website that they are looking for possible interviews, and many of the real life superheroes have replied with the notion of 'chatting on Skype'. This would make for an interesting take on a formal interview, because the interviewee would not be there in the room with the production group. Lighting, angle and their position to the camera would totally be up to them, but on the other hand, this form of interacting with the possible primaries is a new and technological advancement to documentary interviews, and I think there may be a chance of the 'Skype interview' becoming a documentary style in itself.
