Joe's Ideas & Research MY LIFE IN DRAG: A documentary about different people's lives revolving around drag car racing and the effect it has one their friends and families. (Research including looking into one of the most popular drag racing tracks in the UK, being http://www.santapod.co.uk/dr_history.php Research: |

This documentary fits into the poetic, reflexive and participatory modes. It fits into the poetic mode as the music is manipulated especially when the subject is talking about and referring to the dangers of drag racing e.g. the music has a low tone upon discussion of the dangers and subsequently changes when the tone of the conversation changes to a more optimistic one (discussion about the potential of his daughter going into racing). This fits into the reflexive mode because as there is only one subject being interviews, it is only showing one truth, also there are aspects of the editing which we are made aware of as when the subject talks about his father we start to see clips of a man at the racing track whom we assume is the subjects father. This documentary fits into the participatory mode because we do hear the interviewer ask questions and therefore is directly interacting with the subject. The themes this documentary fits into is identity, as it only looks at one subject and his relationship with the topic of the documentary and social issues as it looks at the relationship between the subject and his family. It is not a personal intention to make a documentary based on one primary and during the process of making a documentary, multiple subjects and primaries will be used to gain a wider perspective of identities among primaries within the topic and to place a greater emphasis on the social issues. ECONOMISE ME: A documentary about the effect of the global financial crash and a look into if the world would benefit from reverting back to a medievil bartering system (a resource based economy as opposed to a monetary based economy). This would also include looking at capitalism and its effect on the subject matter. Has capitalism failed? Or is it too big to fail? (Research includes looking at news articles, opinion pieces and balanced & impartial pieces such as debates. An example of a related article written by Charlie Brooker for The Guardian is here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/sep/25/charlie-brooker-capitalism-and-shreddies?INTCMP=SRCH) This article poses the question that, if we do revert back to a bartering system, how would it be possible to continue to enjoy the products we have enjoyed since the beginning and growth of capitalism without it? I would use this Research: This is the first episode in documentary series called Around The World In 80 Trades, it follows the subject Conor Woodman travelling around the world, after selling his flat and quitting his job selling e-business's, as he tries to bulk buy and sell products in a traditional bartering system as mention by Charlie Brooker in the aforementioned article. This series falls under the style of observational documentary, or 'fly on the wall'. It would not be an intention for 'Economise me' to follow one person nor to see if any one person can complete this quest, however it would be an intention to ask the question should we stop using the capitalist infrastructure that has been adopted globally? Within this documentary I would feature either shots of business and how they run, what they sell e.t.c. as part of and or integrated into my documentary signatures. This is a documentary about how the global economic structure is failing millions of people in poverty around the world. Its themes are community, society and political reflexivity. It is also of the observational mode of documentary. I would go out and get interviews with primaries such as financial experts and dedicated hard working people of the working class such as featured in this documentary.
