Documentary space

Laura mulvey dictates that documentary is a matter of observing a true world and environment, as opposed to a fictional world i.e. that of a mockumentary. This implies that all documentarians are of the particiapatory mode in that they must interact with what they are documenting.

Visual Theory

The rule of thirds is the basis that is used by all professional practitioners. It creates an aesthetically pleasing image regardless of the subject matter, specifically it can, if used in the right context create complex meaning and can even convey contradicting and or contrasting meanings.

Rhetoric

Rhetoric is a means to purposefully manipulate meaning and to create it. Specifically, narration and use of ideological reasoning and analogical reasoning can be used to arrive at conclusions, a prime example of this is Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion.

Poetic mode and Expository mode

Photography used to document war can come under the bracket of decisive moment. Photography used to capture and document the aftermath of war, specifically its effects on war veterans most commonly come under the the poetic mode and the expository mode. Both of these war related issues are difficult if not impossible to document without the results immediately falling into the realm of NIMBY.

Database documentary

Some of the first films were documentaries, of these documentaries were just footage of such spectacles as a wall being demolished, trains leaving the station and rough seas. Modern day documentaries contain manipulated truths and the process of source, path goal.

Documentary modes

In documentary universe, there are different modes in which a documentary can be defined, most of these modes can be split into two groups, one that observes and one that participates. Although this can be argued, as documentary has many different modes and styles. Their are two main documentary styles: story telling and story making. The latter is can also be known as mockumentary which is the use and or creation of fictional objects, people and events which poses the concept of reliability on people as the primary sources.
