Rosie - Individual Analysis

When we set out in our groups, the first thing that we ensured was the production roles that we would each take throughout the next two semesters. I chose Sound and Art. My reasoning for taking on these two roles, is one, I did not do much sound in the last semester and thought that this was the perfect opportunity to involve myself more into this area and learn more about different sound techniques and gain a wider knowledge in the area of sound. I also decided to pick Art because I enjoy being creative and trying to come out with ideas that other people would not normally think.

Once all roles were established within our group it was time to start discussing particular ideas of interesting that we each thought would be something that no one else would think to document. My two ideas were not used for our final idea but we all agreed the Chris’ idea of documenting Superheroes could give us the different feel that we were searching for. It was decided among the group that we would look into all aspects of what is meant to be a “Superhero”. This meant looking into the London Riots, people that dressed up as Superheroes and look after their community, and pastors that help drunken people at the end of nights out. This gave us a good diverse area for us to look into and decide whether we wanted to look into one aspect, or too try and incorporate all different types of what it means to be a Superhero into our documentary. Our target audience for our documentary will be a niche market. The reason for this being is that though comic books attract a very wide audience this is more or less an American culture, rather than British. So our target audience could be quite a niche demographic, but our documentary could interest people that interested in further knowing about average, everyday people that do go out into the streets and protect civilians.

To start off our documentary it is vital that we have primary and secondary sources. Our main primary sources are the Dark Spartan, who dresses up as what would appear to be superhero entire and has vowed to fight crime in his neighbourhood with his sidekick the Void. We then have S.O.S another Superhero figure, who like the Dark Spartan, has vowed to help all that he can, no matter what the problem is. And finally, we have Fathers 4 Justice, which is an organisation for the rights of Fathers, which fight for their rights while dressed up as different Superheroes such as Spiderman or Batman. But in case these primary roles do not work out, with have our secondary sources which are Street Pastors, Heroes Run, the Police, various newspaper articles and the London Rioters. We may decide that we as a group want to try and corporate our secondary sources with the primaries. But, if we are focusing just on Superheroes we may not want to draw attention away from that because we could go off course from what we want to present.

We will approach the documentary in an observational, fly-on-the-wall and perhaps in a participatory mode. We will want to observe the Superheroes in action as they fight crime and do their everyday thing as a superhero. In regards to the participatory mode, we as a group may or may not decide whether to get one of our members of the team to actively take part in becoming a superhero and to incorporate this as another potential theme in our documentary.

As group, we work well together and each of us pull our own weight into the project and do our best to make and work on our decisions. This is an example, as mentioned before where we had a group meeting to discuss what idea we would take on board. We all listened to each member’s individual ideas and made comments to what we liked and disliked about the idea and whether we thought it would work well or not. Throughout the post production of this project we have continue to hold group meetings to discuss different aspects and ideas that we wanted to go through with. This was very beneficial to our group because we needed to make these decisions as a whole, for example business cards, what themes and modes we wanted to use for the documentary, what we wanted our target audience to gain from our target audience and how we would set about filming it. If there were group issues among us, then we would set up meetings to discuss or use the One Loud Cat Productions Facebook page were we could openly discuss our issues. An example of this was posters and who was creating them, but after discussing it and acknowledging the problem, as a group we were able to resolve the issues the very same day and work towards creating more for the documentary.

In the presentation I will be discussing the posters and the trailers, this is because since my role is Art it is therefore my role to discuss these supporting media products in the presentation. As well as posters, flyers and stickers will be made and anything else that I may think will help the promotion of our documentary. For sound I will be using a boom pole, a gun microphone, a Marantz and possibly radio mics, so the best sound is recorded and can be used.
