Documentary Process
Throughout this page, I will be discussing the different aspects of Documentary knowledge that I have learnt from this module. I will looked the genres and styles, the history of Documentary, how to prepare for interviews and how they should be structured, questions and how to ask them, different tecnhiques and practitioners. Documentary Styles and Genres There are many different genres of Documentaries and it is important to know what they are and how to recognise them. Ethnofiction: Animated Documentarie: Nature Documentaries: Mockumentaries: Docudramas: Reality Film: Pracitioners and styles in History Lewis Hine 1874 - 1940. (Documented ethical ideas.) Jacob Rii 1849 - 1914. (Documented the poor living conditions in New York to make middle class viewers aware of their conditions.) Henri Cartier-Bresson (Documented ethical ideologies. Noted to have started the indecisive moment.) Dorothea Lange (Known for her staged Migrant Mother image to make people aware of the social issues surrounding this time.) Walker Evans (An Anthropological photographer, documented icons rather than people.) Robert Frank (Like photographer, Walker Evans, but his work was not politically orientated and had more of an artistic statement about his work.) War Photography - Vietnam 1965-75. Eddie Adams (Best known for his photograph 'Bullet in the Head' which is the excution of Vietcong prisoner Nguyen Van Lem who was excuted by Nguyen Ngoc Loan.) Jeff Wall and Martin Parr (Both best known for staging their images to more soical, cultural and political issues made aware.) Oliviero Toscani (Known for his use making statements of all sorts of issues using fashion.) ![]() In our documentary we will be using three modes, observerational, fly-on-the-wall and the participatory mode.
