Matt - Individual Analysis |

At
the beginning of this project I came up with a few ideas of what we could
document so that when we came to a group meeting I could bring them forth. My
main idea was about flash mobs and how they came about. I researched into the
phenomenon as I knew they were big a few years ago but didn't know if they
still happened. To my surprise I found a website that was devoted to the
planning of flash mobs over the UK and the world and that flash mobs are still
a regular occurrence. Also coincidentally, I found out from Chris that some of
the drama students had planned to create a dance routine to a medley of songs
and perform this flash mob on the Winchester high street, we ended up filming
and editing this. My other ideas were about tribute bands that tour the country
and world in comparison to local ones who do it for fun down their local. Also
night shift workers and how their routine of life is different to that of the
people who work in the day, but I didn't get as much research on these ideas as
we all had main ideas that could have been used as a back ups had we needed
them so felt that concentrating more on my back up idea of flash mobs would be
more beneficial.
In
the group meeting we decided on an idea that Chris came up with as it was
something we all have an interest in and felt passionate about working on. This
gave us quite a wide area to research and many different paths to explore,
choosing the right path for our documentary to follow would be a long process.
The inspiration from America and Hollywood films like Kick Ass and different
real-life superheroes across the world is one of the main focal points. Also
the political/charity route with street pastors, Fathers 4 Justice, Pass It On
Africa and their charity event Heroes Run. My
role for this is editor and co-cameraman. The reasons for choosing these roles
is because they are skills based departments that I would like to further my
skills in. Whilst sharing the role of cameraman, I believe that I can watch the
other cameraman, Paul, to see how others can think of shooting a subject so as
to broaden my imagination of what could look good. As the editor I believe that
this project will help me become more knowledgeable when working with a package
so I can manage to achieve what I see in my mind. Due to both my roles being in the production stage and
not the pre-production stage, I therefore have not had as much of an integral
role as others in my group. I have inputted my ideas with regards to our final
idea of what we are going to document. I have researched a lot into real-life
superheroes across the world and also gained better knowledge of superheroes
since beginning this project as I felt my knowledge was a bit lacking in
comparison to some of the others in the group. I have mainly been focusing on
real-life superheroes in America for background research as this is the country
where the phenomenon first took place. With
the photo essay work I felt happy with the outcome of my work as I have never
used a Canon 450D or any DSLR camera before. Whilst I think my work was good, I
feel I could've pushed harder for a better end product. Even though my lack of
experience with photography I could have been more experimental with the images
that I produced and even picked a topic that's more public orientated and
involving being more interactive with the general public. The main reason I
didn't was partly because of the fear of confronting people and asking but I
realise it is something I need to do for any future projects. As
a group I think we have functioned well so far, I feel we all pull our weight
with the work that has needed to be done so far. Lucy has been very good at
organising everyone and letting them know their deadlines that she has set for
them personally. Despite Alex coming into our group late he has contributed a
lot to what we have worked towards so far. I do feel however that sometimes
when working with the group we work more as friends than as a company, this
leads to sometimes not getting as much work done as possible in the time slot or
spending more time than is necessary on work. Despite this small negative I
feel that is justified by what we have accomplished so far which I hope will
continue onto next semester. We haven't had any issues so far and if their were
disagreements about differing opinions then we looked to resolve them as a
group to find the best solution. As I said earlier, my roles within the
documentary are during the production stage of the making of this documentary,
I feel that this semester I have done a fair amount of work but need to prepare
myself to being working more as the preparation work will still need to be done
as well as going to film the documentary and then editing it together as well.
As deadlines have been closing in at the end of this semester I have upped the
amount of work I have been doing to get the work that needs to be done,
finished. I think next semester I will feel the pressure to get the work done
as from then the group will rely on me massively as I have a major role to
fulfil. In the presentation that take place on
Wednesday 14th December, I shall be explaining the technical elements of our
pitch. Outlining any visual signatures, which we have discussed as a group and
are currently looking into how they main visual signature can be achieved. I
will also be discussing what equipment we will use when we come to shoot the
project and justifying the reasons for using one camera over another. |
