Chris' Photo Essay For my photo essay I decided to go to Intech observatory in Winchester. I thought this would be an interesting location as it's quite prominant in the landscape which is mainly just feilds. I thought as it was a tourist attraction that there would be many people there and many interesting things to photograph. But while I was there I discovered that it is struggling to get tourists to visit and so some of the attractions are falling into disrepair. Therefore my photo essay took a turn and went on to show both these things. |

Image 1: Observatory f/4.0 1/640 ISO 200 This image is one of the first I took of the observatory. I chose it for my project as I thought it was an interesting contrast of technology and nature. In the editing process I decreased the saturation of greens to make the grass less vibrant. I then increased the saturation of the blues to make the sky a deeper colour and really make the observatory stand out against the previously white back ground. I then used the sharpening tool to increase the clarity of observatory and once again really make it stand out from the background. While I was actually taking the picture I used a low ISO (spanish) while taking the picture due to the white building and quite bright sun. Image 2: Access f/6.3 1/80 ISO 200 I decided that this would be a good image for my essay for the science vs. nature aspect of it as the observatory has replaced the fields and other plant life that were once there free for the public to enjoy and climb on. When it came to editing the photo the wasn't much I felt that it needed doing to it. The only thing I did was increase the blues on saturation to increase the vividness of the sky in the background. I also changed the focus to make the "No public access" sign the focus of the image. On the camera setting I also changed the focus point to the right of the screen to make sure this further increased its focus. Image 3: Satellite Dish f/4.0 1/640 ISO 100 This is the first of my favourite depth of field shots. This is a background focus picture that I took of two satellite dishes behind a gate. I thought this image would make a good addition to my photo essay as it follows on from the last image "Access". In the editing process I first changed the exposure by increasing it and I decreased the brightness to create a clearer image in the background I also decreased the blue luminance to make the sky more blue therefor drawing your eyes more to the foreground. While I was taking the picture I changed the focus from auto to manuel so I could perform the pull focus myself. This allowed me easily to change the depth of field of the image. Image 4: Gate f/4.0 1/640 ISO 100 This is the second of my depth of field shots. In comparison to the first image, this is a foreground focus shot. For this image in the editing process I increased the contrast to really make the bars of the gate stand out against the background. I then decreased the luminance blues to make the sky darker which makes the background less interesting and make the bars again more prominent. I finally increased the sharpening to once again make the bars on the image stand out as fully as they can. Image 5: Blocks f/6.3 0.8 ISO 200 This image is from one of the exhibits inside the observatory. I thought it was an interesting photo as it's a low angle shot with a low shutter speed. It also shows a use of depth of field. I put this shot in my essay as I felt like it showed how the observatory was lacking in tourists. As I was able to balance the camera on the edge of a table, I was able to steady the shot allowing for a long shutter speed without blurring the picture to much. When it came to editing the image I didn't change much, I only adjusted the clarity of it to +50 making the block in focus as clear as possible. Image 6: Camera vs. Nature f/5.6 1/640 ISO 400 This is an image of a camera which I found outside the observatory which was broadcasting images to inside the building of the surrounding nature. I thought this image was a nice contrast of science and natures so included it in my essay. When it came to editing the photo I decided to greyscale the picture to increase the drama and take all colour from the background. I then decreased the green saturation to really make the camera stand out against what was around it. I took the shot from a low angle to give the camera almost a sense of power over what it was filming. Image 7: The Eye f/4.0 1/8 ISO 400 I thought this was a good image for my project as it shows a exhibit falling into disrepair. This is shown by bits of paint missing around the eye. When it came to editing this image I worked on it a lot to get the black and white while maintaining some aspect of colour. I took inspiration for this from the films Schindler's List and Sin City. To get this effect I first changed the temperature to 4900 then changed the saturation of the image. I changed all the reds, oranges and yellows to -100 and I increased all the greens, blues, aquas, purples and magentas to +100. This created a black a white image with a touch of green to it. I then changed the luminance to increase it further. I changed all the reds, oranges, yellows and greens to +100 and I changed the aquas, blues, purples and magentas to -100. This created the black and white image with the prominent aqua-marine colour. I found it to bright though in the bottom right corner so I added a graduated filter so darker the specific area. Image 8: Mist f/4.0 1/60 ISO 400 I took this photo as an action shot. I thought it was interesting as it was something that wasn't actually solid to focus on and it only lasted for a few seconds which meant taking the photo was a challenge. I felt like it was a good addition to my essay as it is a good example of a breaking the edge image. Although you see the main body of mist rising, you don't see the end of the beginning so I felt like it was a good example of this technique. I didn't actually edit this photo as I liked the raw quality to it. Image 9: Ball f/4.0 1/60 ISO 400 This is a photo of another exhibit in the observatory. I thought that this would be a good addition to my essay as it shows an attraction clearly in focus with a person in the background far away and very out of focus. I believe this makes a strong social point that the observatory is lacking in customers. I like the use of light in this image and I think the areas left over exposed really help to make the green of the ball extremely clear. This is another image that I did not edit as I liked it the way it was. Image 10: Musical Blocks f/6.3 0.8 ISO 200 This is another image of the block table. I decided to take this photo as when placed on the table the blocks created light and sounds and wave forms. I thought this would be a good opportunity to play with the shutter speed and really manipulate the light being given off by the blocks. I also decided to try an above shot with this photo to make the blocks seem less powerful and alone. When it came to editing the photo I adjusted many things to make it as clear and as interesting as possible. I firstly increased the exposure to +0.30 to make it brighter. I then increased the colours of the reds and the aquas on saturation to +100 to really make the colours stand out. I also decreased the purples (-20) to make the other colour stand out more. I then increased the contrast (+55), the vibrance (+30) and the clarity (+70) to make the image more interesting, clearer and increase the vividness of the light. Image 11: Sign f/ 6.3 1/30 ISO 200 I felt like this was a good image to include in my essay as it include people and is a good example of breaking the edge photography while also including a good clear focus point on the sign in the bottom right corner. When it came to editing this image I first increased the clarity (+50) which really made the sign stand out to the point where it looks like it was photo shopped in. I like this as it really draws your attention to it first before you look at the rest of the picture. I then increased the brightness (+23) to make the whole thing a bit more interesting and decreased the green saturation (-50) to dull the vibrancy of grass behind. Image 12: Sunset and Sphere f/6.3 1/125 ISO 100 My final image is another shot of the observatory but mainly focusing on the sun set behind returning the the original idea of nature vs. science. When it came to editing this photo I thought I would really play on the sunset so firstly used the auto function to get the best exposure levels and then decreased the blues saturation (-80) to really make the sky and the dome lose its power compared to the sunset. I then Increased the vibrance (+100) to really make the sun set the focus of the image and over power the rest of the photo with it's striking oranges and over exposure. |
