Paul - Lecture Notes 

Week 1 

This was the first lecture of the year, it covered what we would be aiming towards and what we would need to do to achieve it. This lecture was useful as we found out about using Yola as a free tool to promote ourselves as individuals and as a production company.

Week 2

This lecture was based around Photojournalism and Documentary, we were taught about photographers such as Henri-Cartier Bresson, learning about his theory of decisive moment and the difference between that and staged manipulated photography. This was helpful because it gave a broader overview of taking photographs, which would prove useful in creating the photo essay.

Week 3

This week there was no lecutre as we were split in to two groups as we were having a masterclass in using the Canon 450d camera. Because there was no lecture this gave us ample possibility to work on our Yola sites, and progress on our documentary idea. 

Week 4

This week was the masterclass for our group to learn the ways of the Canon 450d. We learnt about shutter speeds and depth of field in photography and how it can be effective. This class was useful to me because I learnt a new skill as i'd never used the 450d before. Which is what we were told to use for the photo essay. 

Week 5

This lesson was a masterclass for Final Cut Pro.

Week 6

This week was a masterclass for editing Raw images on photoshop Raw editing package. We learned how to tweak a photo to make it look its best, and how the pixels overlap in a Raw file making the picture quality better and more usable in other media formats, as the picture can be blown up to better sizes without pixelation.

Week 7

This lecture was based on our upcoming documentary pitch, where we were given the information of what needed to go into the pitch, how to make our pitches work within the industry format and the aspects of our idea that we needed to push. 

Week 8

This was another masterclass for Final Cut Pro, to develop our skills further from week 5.

Week 9

This lecture was sharing our ideas and progress with the class and watching examples of films we could take inspiration from. This was helpful as we got to see good examples of documentaries of a similar style to our own, giving us some pointers in the direction to take our film from a DOP point of view.

Week 10

This lecture was cancelled due to strike action being taken to oppose the pension cuts

Week 11

This lecture was broken down into 15 minute group tutorials where we could discuss our final idea and how we were planning our pitches for week 12. 

Week 12

Pitch for our film 'May Contain Heroes'.
