Dee Belliere, co founder of the company is a close friend of my auntie.

The Belliere's set up MEAK and nearly thirty years later it is a well-respected charity carrying out thousands of life-saving and life-changing operations. With no overheads in the UK, MEAK knows that all the monies raised go straight to benefit of those who need it most. They carry out around ten to twelve missions each year helped by medical teams from the UK who give up their time for free. Dee and Mike still go with them; but these days are more likely to be wearing medical scrubs than swimwear, as they get hands on with the people they care about so much.

The Dementia 2010 report showed that 820,000 people in the UK have dementia, a number forecast to grow. The annual cost of dementia to the economy is £23 billion more than that of cancer and heart disease combined.

Research advances understanding of nerve cell death in Alzheimer’s

Scientists have moved forward in their understanding of how nerve cells are killed during Alzheimer’s disease, according to research published in the Journal of Neuroscience (Wednesday 28 September).

Researchers from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Maryland, found that mice with a high level of the mutated version of the human protein, amyloid precursor protein (APP), in olfactory nerve cells had four times as much olfactory nerve cell death in three weeks as normal mice. APP are responsible for amyloid plaques - a hallmark of Alzheimer's. However, the cell death in this experiment was found to occur in the absence of plaques suggesting it could be the mutated APP itself, rather than the amyloid plaques that was the cause.

The intial idea I had was to make a film about dimentia/ alzheimers, as I read an article over the summer about ways they are hoping alter or cure it. And as my uncle owns a old persons home which speicalises in looking after people with these diseases I thought I could get contacts through him and interview some family members to see how they are affected and try and interview someone who is trying to find a cure or knows about the process they are going through.
