http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p005jyj1

Here is a short documentary about polish and british workers in a recycling center. What works well here is all the shots of litter being collected, this gives us an idea of a fraction of how much rubbish we put into recycling. The various shots of workers in high visibility jackets gives us and idea of how grim / mundane the other side of recycling can be. This documentary overall resonates a very NIMBY picture of what people don't see after they have recycled.

Week 1

This was an introduction week and as such we learnt what we would be covering over the coming weeks, what workshops we would be doing and roughly which projects we were going to do. I found this weeks lecture informative and I was inspired by the prospects of establishing a production company, for which the Yola website guides were very useful.

Week 2

This weeks lecture was focused on the documentary & photojournalism and the different types of practioners such as Dorothea Lange, Lewis Hine and Martin Parr. Also, we watched a domumentary by student from last year, titled 'Pinfall: A Professional Wrestling Documentary'. This was thouroughly inspirational and informative about which direction we could go in and the type of conceptual and creative mind that would be acceptable to the project.

Week 3

This week was dedicated to group work as their was no lecture, as part of this group work we further discussed documentary ideas and our roles within the project. properly establishing and getting our yola sites going took priority.

Week 4

A workshop educating us on the Canon 450 D SLR cameras took place of a lecture this week, which was very informative and educational, as I have had slight training on digital SLR's in the past, however not as in depth and as interesting as this.

Week 5

Another workshop took the place of the lecture, this time it was on the Final Cut Pro editing software. This was extremely helpful as we had recieved minimal to no training on this previously in the first year. The main techniques I learned were how to bring the volumn of a batched section of sliced footage and how to insert name titles like that which would be featured within a documentary and or interview to highlight the persons name and profession / information that states how they relate to the rest of the project.

Week 6

This week was a workshop on RAW photo editing. We touched upon the benefits of RAW image files over other standard photo files such as jped and Photoshop.psd. What was beneficial about this week was upon learnign how incredibly easy and substancially effective some aspects of RAW photo editing are. In addition to other weeks, this was incredibly inspiring as it gave me a definitive idea of what techniques I want to use when editing my photo essay.
